Enigmagic asked:
I have just got a part time job cleaning some office space for a friend of mine. I have never done a cleaning job before (always office jobs and admin type jobs) and I don’t know what I should be cleaning. Obviously, I know how to hoover and clean the washrooms and kitchen, etc, but should I clean desks, phones, computers, etc? If so, should I move stuff to clean them, or just leave everything alone in those areas?

You should clean all those things but you should be careful to replace all papers where they were before.
The cleaners in my office are always moving my stuff about and it is very aggravating sometimes!
your boss should give you instructions for what you can move and what you must leave when you start, if a desk is full of paperwork you need to know if you can stack it so you can polish the desk or weather to leave it,
Around the cubicles or desks I wouldn’t move anything but you could dust the keyboard & or monitor. Good luck with new job.
dont move anything!
always use an anti static cloth on the computer and maybe anti bacterial wipes on desks and phones
dont forget to empty bins
In my view a cleaner should not touch office papers – they might get blamed if things go missing or get lost. Office desk tops should be left clear of all work papers to allow the cleaner to do his/her job. Phones and computers should only dusted once a week – do not touch the screens on work station monitors as these can easily be damaged. Get this agreed with your client so that there is no confusion. If the client insists on the monitors being done then you need to get agreement that only anti-static dusting of the screen will be done – no spray cleaners or moist wipes to be used.
When I was young (not yesterday) we had to clear our desks every night before leaving so that the cleaner could clean. If I were you I wouldn’t clean any desk that was full of clutter.
Actually there would be a formula some
of this would come from the person who hired you+agreement.. and the rest from knowledge which you can aquire as you are doing now..
I would clean the chairs and screens with proper supplies.
Phones as well.
Light fixtures and doorway moulding too..
You could clean the keyboards and phones with a cloth dampened with an antibacterial cleaner.
Do not touch the computer screens unless directed to, they’re delicate.
Basically all that needs cleaning, but personally I would ask for guidance as some people could say you have been riffling through their papers etc.
have your boss give you a job description… so you won’t be guessing (too much or too little?)
Be Blessed!
The cleaning contractor and the client should agree a specification which is then passed onto the cleaning staff (normally via a supervisor) which should state what should and what shouldn’t be cleaned and how frequently.
We use these guys at our office ICS Cleaning – and they drew up a clear spec which we were happy with, if there any other things that come up, such as leaving certain desks etc we let them know and they pass the info onto their staff.
You should use a damp cloth for the bins and window ledges and a clean dry one for the desk, go easy on the polish not everyone approves of it
Hi Im an area supervisor for a cleaning company, your supervisor should have told you what to do,but if you dont have one then yes pick up phones an wipe underneath them move pen holders, paperwork if its in a pile but not if its scattered all over move keyboards an dust under them also the towers which are normally on the floor under the desks, table legs and chairs top of pc but not the screen.
i am an office cleaner for 14yrs what you do is keep all papers as they are but push them to-gether tidy and it lets you clean the desk lift away any rubish or dirty cups (they usualy leave it for me to wash. lazy)dust the phone and computer there should be special wipes for computer and they clean them themselves good luck
