How do I write a letter telling my customers I am raising my rates on cleaning their house?

I have a house cleaning business and I have never gone up on my rates. Due to inflation I need to go up $5 a visit, I have become very close to some of these people and not so close to others…any ideas?

I don’t think $5 increase is too much to ask. Just simply put it in a letter pretty much like you stated here (due to rising costs of gasoline, etc. you are raising your rates). Also state in the letter that you value their business and you hate to have to do this. Also state that you have never gone up on your rates before, but these economic times have left you no other choice.

    You should be fine!

If your rates are in line with everyone elses rates, then you will be fine. But sometimes people just hate paying more and you might lose some business. For instance. My dad owned a rental property and there was a guy living there for 15 years and paying way below market rent. My dad raised the rent one year 100 dollars. The guy flipped out and decided to move. Funny thing was, his new adjusted rent was still cheaper than anyone in town, but he decided he wanted to “show my Dad” by moving. Wasnt a problem because we found another renter willing to pay the rent very quickly.

With the high cost of everything, that small increase shouldn’t bother anyone. Just start it something like this, “I want to thank you for your continued business, and i want to let you know that due to the increase in gasoline prices and supplies, I must increase my service by $5.00 per session.”
