Buy a can of Resolve carpet shampoo or another brand, then folllowing the directions on the can, use a new, but inexpensive sponge mop, to apply the shampoo. Let it dry completely before it’s walked on. You may want to buy a can of Scotchguard & use on this stretch of hallway, since it seems to be a high traffic area.
I suggest that you either take your shoes off outside, or put a heavy plastic rug type of thing over the rug in the hallway to avoid this problem. Try resolve for now!
